Tossing out Free Speech with a Twist
I have never been a fan of Don Imus, nor had I ever thought to come to his defense, but after this ludicrous week of bashing by so many, I have to say a few things. Most if not all of my points have been made but for the record:
This society had better wake up or prepare themselves for more of the same. Many of us have sat idly by while the hen house is being raided by all sorts of vermin. namely, Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson. Not that this is a surprise, but it just goes beyond reason, for CBS to fire Imus for his comments. Everyone knows they were wrong. Everyone winced (or should have) when first hearing them. The problem, is that Imus has made his reputation by being controversial. If you don't like him, don't listen to him. It doesn't mean than CBS or his viewers endorse his rhetoric or his philosophy, it's just that the same sort of thing has kept him on the radio all this time.
Saviors of the Black movement, Sharpton and Jackson step up to the first microphone and look into the camera with disdain on their brows. 'These women are humiliated'. No they're not. Their hard work and accomplishments speak for themselves. Are they going to call for firings every time someone says something offensive? It's a long road ahead for that kind of thinking. And now, what are we teaching them? If left alone, his peers would have condemned him. His employers would have disciplined him. His sponsors could have dropped him. But that's not enough. According to those two Disciples, firing and stoning are the only answers.
Let's keep them in mind when the wind blows in the other direction. And blow it will.
